Mr Roger Westbrook

BSc (Hons), C.Eng., FIStructE

Mr Westbrook has wide and in-depth experience as design team leader for various building projects within UK and overseas, including Olympic Games buildings in Beijing, tensile fabric structures in Riyadh and Stadia in Cape Town, as well as Athletics stand in a Township. In the UK designs were carried out on many retail buildings, office buildings and industrial buildings in steel, concrete, load-bearing brickwork and structural timber. Commissions also carried out on Structural Surveys and Expert Witness issues with many domestic and commercial buildings over 45 years.

During the last 10 years of his career he was involved in projects which client’s and Governments were supporting as ‘Sustainable Buildings’. He was part of the Project Design Team, completed with a professional ‘Assessor’ for the 44-storey ‘Portside’ Building in Cape Town which is now in detail design and has aspirations of an ‘Excellent’ rating under the Australian Green Star rating system. The ‘Portside’ Building incorporates a mixed living accommodation / office space / hotel / retail space / parking levels, which will not only be the first ‘Green’ Building in Cape Town but also the highest. From the Cape Town too was designed the Nyungwe National Park project in Rwanda, Africa, which was to attain, under the insistence of the President of Rwanda as high a ‘Green’ standard as possible. Also designed were Academies and Schools in the UK under the BREEAM system, and all projects feature to some extent as ‘Case Studies’ in this course.

Mr Westbrook has also designed the Media Centre Building for the Beijing Olympics with special considerations on Seismic Design and Fascia Engineering (which would be featured in our course), a National Aquarium called ‘The Deep’ at Hull, UK as well as the Greater London Council Headquarters, London in UK. Whilst working as an Academic in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Bradford, he produced and published three textbook versions of ‘Structural Design in Practice’ and co-authored a textbook on Liquid Retaining Structures. In view of his extensive experience and research, he travels to give technical lectures in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Doha and Dubai.
